If you’re having a day where you feel like you’ve lost a bit of your glow, there are ways to give yourself a natural energy boost. Maybe your crown has slipped a little sideways, and you feel like you need a nap, but there is work to be done, children to be fed, and endless running around to do. As a mom and business owner, there isn’t much time for a mid-afternoon kip, so I often have to turn to these methods to get through a busy day.
Here are my ten ways to give yourself a natural energy boost. Try one or try them all, they all work, and they will give you a new lease on life.
1. Stand On Your Head
Headstand, handstand, or even simply lying on the floor with your feet up against the wall; these are all postures that encourage the flow of blood to your head. With that comes oxygen in the blood that gives your brain a little boost and rejuvenates you from the inside out. An instant energy enhancer that gives you a little bit of a tingle too!
2. Crunch On Some Raw Fruit Or Vegetables
The freshness from a crunchy, raw carrot or a juicy apple will invigorate your tastebuds and boost your energy levels. When your blood sugar levels drop from not eating consistently, you will feel it in your energy. Keep your blood sugar up, keep your metabolism pumping and get a dose of raw freshness into your body. If you want energy-rich foods then opt for bananas and peanut butter or some crunchy, fresh and sugar-free granola with low-fat yoghurt.

3. Go For A Quick, Brisk Walk
Getting outdoors and into the fresh air is a fabulous way to wake yourself up, but it also lifts the spirits if you’re feeling down. Walking will also get the blood pumping a little harder, which in turn helps oxygen circulate around the body to all your cells, giving you a much-needed pick me up.
4. Drink Some Fresh Water With Lemon In It
Water on its own is a remedy for anything. If you’re feeling tired, an ice-cold glass of water will definitely make you feel more alive and alert. Often, when we’re feeling low on energy, we can be a little dehydrated, which makes one feel sleepy and lethargic. Stave off dehydration with at least a full glass of water and add a few slices of lemon to your water for an additional citrus burst and vitamin C that will help your cells zing with life.

5. Meditate
Meditation allows you to take time for yourself by going inward and reflecting on your current state of being. It gives you a sense of awareness about why you’re feeling the way you do, which in turn allows you to acknowledge your feelings and then move on. Although you might feel that meditation will make you feel more sleepy, it will actually make you feel fresher and more awake.
6. Eat Some Raw Nuts
All nuts are a great source of energy, but almonds and peanuts are especially high in magnesium and folate too. These two ingredients are building blocks for energy production and a lack of them in the body can leave you feeling drained. If you can’t find almonds or peanuts, try some peanut butter on low GI or rye toast… or opt for whatever nuts you can get your hands on. They’re all great!
7. Do Some Sun Salutes
Even simple stretching is enough to get the blood flowing around your body again, reaching well into your limbs too. Sun salutes have been so cleverly put together that they bring a bit of fire (rajas) back into the body. Just doing ten sun salutes is the perfect way to awaken body, mind and soul, which is why they’re called sun salutes as you should do them with the rising sun to wake yourself up and prepare for the day.

8. Pump Your Favourite Tunes And Have A Little Boogie
There’s nothing like your favourite song to get you in the mood for anything. And if you have the opportunity to dance a little too, then go for it! Exercise gets oxygen pumping around your body, which is a natural energy booster, but it also releases endorphins, your feel-good hormones. When coupled with your favourite song, it can only give you the most delicious boost of energy!

9. Get Into The Water
Water is incredibly rejuvenating. Just a dive in the pool, lake or ocean immediately refreshes the body and mind and can give you a whole new lease on life. If you don’t have a body of water nearby, hop in the shower and turn on the cold tap. Get the goosebumps tingling and wake your body up with a fresh burst of cold water.
10. Drink Some Green Tea
Green tea is a natural energy booster because it has a healthy dose of caffeine in it, but it’s also loaded with antioxidants and anti-ageing properties. Have a cup of green tea to give you a lift at any time of day, but bear in mind that if taken later in the day, it could give you too much energy, preventing sleep later on. There are loads of naturally flavoured green teas available if you don’t like the taste of the original.
