Okay, let’s be honest… it’s the worst time from the perspective of being cold, mornings being dark… even evenings being dark! All you really want to do in Winter is snuggle and eat, but then you feel horrible come Spring time when you’ve been poisoning your precious body with all sorts of processed foods and you haven’t been showing yourself the care you deserve.
Whew… that was a long sentence. And so is Winter! But it can also be the perfect opportunity for you to nurture some self-love by focusing time and energy on your body.
Kickstart A Healthy Habit
It’s especially cold in Jozi today, but I urge you to look beyond that and get your fitness gear on and go out and brave the elements. Running or taking a brisk walk in the fresh (freezing) cold air is nothing short of invigorating. And cold. Did I mention cold? But just think how deliciously warm you’ll be once your heart rate is up and you’ve worked up a bit of a sweat. This will then have a chain reaction in the workings of magic within you:
- Your metabolism will speed up
- Your body temperature will be just that much higher, keeping you warm from the inside out
- Your energy levels will be elevated all day, maybe even all weekend
- You will naturally vibrate and glow at a much higher frequency, feeling the love you’ve given yourself for those few moments in time
Exercising also makes you want to eat healthier too because you don’t want to undo the work you’ve put in to make yourself feel good. Well, this is true most of the time. For all those other times, at least you’ll burn the energy you consume faster because your metabolism is running more optimally. Win win, right?
From my perspective, I’ve been getting on my mat four times a week, early in the morning before anyone wakes up. I’ve also been running at least once, if not twice a week in the evenings, before the sun goes down. It’s been magnificent! I feel supercharged, alert, alive and great! It also makes me feel less guilty about the unhealthy snacks I afford myself every so often, the Winter indulgences and of course my Friday night pizza! I’ve earned that baby and I’m going to enjoy it!
It’s all about balance. Balancing exercise with your intake of nutrients and also letting yourself have that Winter comfort food when you want it. In moderation, of course.
Don’t you see? You can have it all! Just use Winter as the season to either keep your exercise regime going or to get started on your journey to health and fitness and overall wellness.
Here is a little 10 minute supercharged workout to start with. It’s really easy and you can do it at home, in your lounge or bedroom… anywhere you want to. I recommend starting off with a brisk walk or run to warm up. Even just a 2.5km bout around a few blocks. If you’ve got nothing to measure distance, then opt for a 20-minute warm up. You could even try skipping for ten minutes too. Since it’s more high impact, you can do it for a little less time than a walk or run. Give yourself a simple stretch afterwards and then hit this 10 minute HIIT work out at home, repeating each move 10 times.
Once you’re done, if you’ve got the energy to try it again… then do it! If you can do this little baby three times in a row, you are totally winning at kicking Winter laziness and lethargy in the teeth! Boom!
